On September 18, the GUM-RED-LINE gallery will open a personal exhibition of Sergei Shutov, "Qualia", telling about the "golden age" when the Moscow underground went from underground to mainstream. The exhibition will present 35 paintings created by the artist over the past five years. Most of them were prepared especially for the exhibition.
"Qualia" is a philosophical term that denotes subjective emotional experience associated with sensations. The sensations may be the same, but perception always colors them individually. Sergey Shutov claims that art is connected with qualia. For more than 40 years, he has been developing his own image system.
Sergey Shutov works with reflective materials. Sparkle is a material analogue of the cosmic ether for the artist. But in works such as "Pepper" (2024) or "Eggplant" (2024), mysticism is combined with buffoonery. In the "Time" series (2024), on the contrary, the artist works with light-absorbing black paint, against the background of which white and red lines and strokes appear - counting days, weeks, maybe years and eras.Especially for the exhibition, part of the GUM-RED-LINE gallery space will be covered with silver polyvinyl chloride, which will serve as a reference to Sergei Shutov's studio on Furmanny Lane in the late eighties. The space of the studio was completely covered with mirror film. And guests of the exhibition opening were offered to wear hats made of shiny foil for "a better connection with art."

The exhibition is open until November 10th
The gallery is open from 10:00 to 22:00 every day. Admission is free.
