On April 29, the Cherry Forest Arts Festival opened an exhibition project dedicated to the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The exhibition "Peace and War of Nikolai Zhukov" on the 1st line of GUM presents the works of the famous Soviet graphic artist, People's Artist of the USSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts, publicist, artistic director of the M.B. Grekov Studio of War Artists Nikolai Nikolaevich Zhukov (1908-1973). The works of this master of drawing and watercolor, the author of the famous poster “Let’s Defend Moscow!”, the creator of the most important series of historical graphics “The Nuremberg Trials”, the illustrator of books, including “The Story of a Real Man” by B. Polevoy, are widely known in our country.
A special place in his creative legacy is occupied by front-line drawings. Nikolai Zhukov walked his path to Victory from a private to a captain, from the very beginning to the end of the war: he served as a soldier in the artillery, then worked in the editorial office of an army newspaper on the Kalinin Front and at the same time as a war correspondent for Pravda. "War requires weapons, bread, shells... And here is a piece of paper. I understood that it could also be a weapon, but it had to be proven in practice,” recalled N.N. Zhukov many years after the war.
The pages of the newspaper Pravda publish his drawings: “Visiting the Defender of Stalingrad”, “Thank you, dear!”, “Autobattalion at Rest”, “Forward!”, “The Heroic Death of Liza Chaikina” and others. During the war, Nikolai Zhukov created many graphic drawings, the heroes of which were soldiers, partisans, doctors and nurses, world citizens: women, children and old people - all who bore on their shoulders the hardships of the most terrible war of the 20th century.
In addition to the visual style, Nikolai Nikolaevich also had an excellent command of literary style: this is proven by the entries from his diary, excerpts from which, included in the exhibition, will undoubtedly arouse the interest of viewers.
The exhibition is built on a chronological principle: each year of the Great Patriotic War reflects the most significant works of this period. Among them are posters that became symbols of the coming victory for our people: "We will defend Moscow!", "Stand firm!", "We swear to take revenge on the Nazi invaders!", "A German tank will not pass here!", "There is something to drink to!" and others. These posters, leaflets, drawings, piercing watercolors, such as “Front-line Cornflowers”, with the great power of Nikolai Zhukov’s talent will convey to the hearts of viewers the truth of the past war, will tell about the pain and suffering that our people went through, and about the heroism and courage that led them to the great Victory.
The exhibition is open on the 1st line of GUM until June 1.
