On March 19, at 8:00 PM, GUM Cinema will present a new session of the Movie Club hosted by the acclaimed film expert Galina Aksyonova. The movie night focuses on The Young Girls of Rochefort.
The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) is director Jacques Demy's successful attempt to repeat the triumph of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg with the same composer – Michel Legrand, the same lead actress – Catherine Deneuve, and headlined by her real-life sister, the gorgeous Françoise Dorléac. The film also features Michel Piccoli (who became a star after Godard's Contempt ) and the European legend Danielle Darrieux.
The difference between The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort is that the former was a hundred percent French-made production, while the latter was infused with the traditions of the American musical. This is why there was more singing in the first movie and more dancing in the second one. The participation of actor and choreographer Gene Kelly, the star of such popular movies of the 1950s as An American in Paris and Singing in the Rain, also called for some additional choreography.
While shooting the movie at the commercial port of Rochefort, Jacques Demy asked to repaint the facades of the buildings in brighter colors. The inhabitants of the city believed in the success of the movie, and they willingly made these sacrifices so that their beloved city would become a place of pilgrimage for numerous travelers.
Guests Arrival and Welcome Champagne at 7:30 PM. The screening begins at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available here or at the GUM box office (Floor 3, Line 3). Ticket Cost: 1000 rubles.
