The annual Flower Fest will open on July 3. For the seventh consecutive year, Russia’s Main Department Store will turn into a blossoming garden until the middle of August! The lines of GUM will be blooming with myriads of different types of beautiful multi-colored flowers.
The guests of the Festival will be wandering around GUM which will be transformed into a Soviet-style park of recreation and leisure from the 1950s. The visitors will be transported to the epoch of social realism: Woman with a Ball, Swimmer, Basketball Player, Soccer Player, and finally the so-called Girl with an Oar. These images became archetypical for all types of sculptures and shared much of the stylistic flourishes that were introduced by Ivan Shadr and Romuald Iodko.
Over 310 000 plants were grown for the GUM Flower Fest: begonias, gazanias, dahlias, New Guinea impatiens, double-flowered pelargoniums, multiflora chrysanthemums, kalanchoes, ageratums, marigolds, coleuses, cinerarias are just a few plants that will be flowering in GUM.
The GUM historical building will be decorated inside out: there are going to be flower arrangements along the lines, fresh flowers carpets will blossom, cache pots with begonias will decorate the façade from the first to the third floor. The colors and aromas of the flowers are mind-boggling! The whole perimeter of the flower beds will be illuminated. For the first time, BoscoFiori will be selling seasonal flowers at special prices at the center of GUM, by the fountain.
This year Italy, represented by ENIT — the Italian Government Tourist Board – became the partner of the Fest for the first time. The unique fresh flower arrangement The Italian TriColour will be on display on Line 1.
The Festival will open on July 3 with a performance of the internationally renowned Nadezhda Nadezhdina Beryozka State Academic Ballet headed by Mila Koltzova. The 70-year old ensemble is a successor of the Russian traditional dance school.
Famous actors, TV presenters, musicians, athletes, and GUM’s best employees will serve as the gardeners. Each of them will place a blossoming plant in the very heart of Moscow, at GUM.
