The Deepest Diving Watch in History: OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional

When explorer Victor Vescovo made it to the bottom of the Mariana Trench aboard the Limiting Factor submersible at the beginning of 2019, he set the new world record by reaching the depth of 10,928 m. OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional made this journey along with him and demonstrated exceptional performance at this depth.

The first Seamaster watch was introduced back in 1948. British aviators and sailors highly praised it due to its waterproof properties and reliability during combat. In 1957 OMEGA launched Seamaster 300 that was specifically designed for divers and deep-water professionals. The unique Ploprof watch appeared in 1970 and was tested by the legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau himself. 2005 marks an important milestone in the history of the Ultra Deep model. The first Planet Ocean watch was produced that very year.

Design of watches for professional divers is a continuous process for the Swiss brand. The masters of OMEGA had to start from scratch to create a chronometer for the Five Deeps expedition assuming all of the risks. OMEGA managed to excel in creating innovative technologies that not only served their purpose to the fullest but also can be adapted for other diving watches in the long run.

The new watches shouldn’t exceed the regular watches in size in order to resist the increased pressure underwater. OMEGA managed to produce a watch with a thickness of only 28 mm while keeping the exclusive waterproof properties. The road to success was not easy. The OMEGA Ultra Deep model underwent Triton’s intensive simulation tests via the finite element method in order to create appropriate pressure levels. By passing all of these tests, OMEGA Seamaster Ultra Deep proved to be the most ultra-deep watch in watchmaking industry.
