GUM Gorkyclassic AutoRally 2019 held in Moscow

July 28 marked the GUM AutoRally – the top event of the retro car season in Russia. For the sixth time, Bosco di Ciliegi presents the most extensive collection of unique Soviet automobiles on Red Square.

GUM AutoRally is held annually since 2014 with the help of the Gorkyclassic Automobile Historical Society. The event quickly became the most large-scale and prestigious retro car competition in Russia.

GUM AutoRally started precisely at noon at Vasilievsky Slope. Tens of beautiful automobiles will pass through the starting arch.

The first team to pass through the starting arch were Christopher and Arthur Black fr om Great Britain. They drove their 1937 Austin roadster. The fearless travelers are currently riding in a car fr om London to Tokyo! Their journey will be completed at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, wh ere the Blacks are planning to cheer for the Russian team. The British team is supported by the Russian AutoMotoClub – partner of the GUM AutoRally.

The race included such prized cars, as the monumental ZIL, luxurious Chaika, stylish Volga, humped Zaporozhets, solid Pobeda, modest Moskvich, and popular Zhiguli.

For the first time in the history of GUM, AutoRally BoscoFresh sent a representative team headed by Ilya Kusnirovich.

Ilya Kusnirovich: “Today is July 28, 2019. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin entered space and heralded the beginning of the age of space exploration. Our car – a 1961 Chaika – was presented in 1961 and is a symbol of humanity’s strive to explore space.”

The team of Gastronome No. 1 was also participating for the first time in the race in a unique Moskvich-401 delivery van. Sixty-five years ago, the Moskvich Automobile Plant produced especially for the newly-opened GUM a series of delivery vans (with a capacity of 250 kg) that were perfect for the cramped GUM basement. Professional renovator Sergey Simonov took great pains to restore the car for its debut at the GUM AutoRally.

The Bosco di Ciliegi Team reminded the audience of the 12th World Youth & Student Festival that took place in Moscow in 1985. Team members were dressed in distinct national clothes that were immediately recognizable: Palestine, Israel, Ukraine, Moldavia, Turkmenia, India, and Mexico were all well-represented. The team drove the rare Youth bus which served government delegations during the Soviet period.

Mikhail Kusnirovich: “This year our team is a sort of a mobile youth and student festival. Our rally of original Soviet cars (mostly from the Gorky Automobile Plant) is not only about speed. It is more focused on the ability of the teams to follow orders. Only those team who can go through all stages will be able to win.”

The rare Chaika GAZ-13С – a landmark government ambulance car of the 1970-1980s – was driven by a team headed by the Silver Rain Radio Station Host Alexander Gusarov. This automobile was used by the elderly members of the CPSU Central Committee.

From 13:00 to 16:00, drivers had a chance to rest at the Museum of Moscow. The building served as the Red Army General Staff automobile base in the 1930s.

The route of GUM AutoRally is changed each year but always includes Moscow’s best-known landmarks. The results of this game are very much dependent on the skill of the drivers and the resourcefulness of the navigators, as well as on the car’s condition. The “youngest” car at this year’s rally is just 35, the oldest – a GAZ-A convertible – is 85. The average age of the vehicles participating in the race is 62! Some of them are reconstructed with care and attention to detail; some of them are treasures that have been in their respective families for generations.

The importance of GUM AutoRally is proven by the partnership of the competition with ELF by Total. ELF is the technical partner of the 2019 GUM AutoRally. With 50 years of priceless experience and a spotless reputation, ELF remains a leader in the realm of autosport.

Two Volgas GAZ-21 were driven by the Gorkyclassic team. The famous race driver, Russian champion, international sportsman Alexey Vasiliev was behind the wheel of #7.

All participants of the AutoRally were insured by the PARI Insurance Company – official partner of the GUM AutoRally.

The AutoRally finished at the MSU Park on Sparrow Hills wh ere the award ceremony took place.

Car #2810 – a Volga GAZ-21 driven by Elena Khachieva with her husband and daughter – was chosen at the most elegant car.

Total awarded the prize for the best “veteran car” to #6 – Pobeda GAZ-М-20, Mikhail and Vasily Shkuratov.

The GUM Special Cup was awarded to the following teams:

3rd place – Natalya Shirokova, #2814, Volga GAZ-21.

2nd place – Yulia Kudrina, #283, Volga GAZ-21.

1st place – Lyudmila Shumakova, #288, Volga GAZ-21.

The GUM Cup was awarded to the following teams:

3rd place – Pavel Sereda and Evgeny Soroka, #15, Volga GAZ-М-21И.

2nd place – Mikhail Gotesman and Anton Zolotov, # 2, GAZ-М-21И.

1st place – the unique cup made on special order by the Italian brand Seguso and the special prize from Ulysse Nardin were awarded once again, as in the previous two years, to team #1: Andrey Morozenko and Boris Kostyrko, Chaika GAZ-13.

The family company Seguso has been passing its glass-blowing techniques for many generations. More than 100 museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, МоМа and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, have included Seguso Vetrid’Arte artworks into their collections. The brand was established as early as 1397 and is still going strong.
